Aluminium Gutters

Aluminium gutters are a light, strong metal gutter system that resists corrosion and lasts longer than uPVC. They suit homes where long life matters, and properties moving from a failed system to a durable one. This guide explains aluminium guttering plainly.

What aluminium guttering is

Aluminium gutters are formed from aluminium lengths or, in seamless systems, formed on site in continuous runs. Lengths join with unions, as with uPVC, or run joint-free in seamless form. Brackets fix to the fascia, and outlets connect to downpipes.

Aluminium is available in half-round, square and ogee profiles, and in a range of colours with a durable coating. Colour choice is wider than with uPVC, which suits properties where appearance matters.

Strengths of aluminium

Aluminium resists corrosion, because it forms a protective oxide layer. It holds its shape well under load and temperature change, so joint seals last longer than on uPVC. It is light, so fitting is straightforward and fascia load is low.

Lifespan is the main advantage. Aluminium gutters last longer than uPVC, with less maintenance over that life. Joint and bracket checks still apply, but seal renewal is less frequent.

Limits of aluminium

Aluminium costs more than uPVC, in material and sometimes in fitting. It can dent under impact, for example from a falling branch, where uPVC might flex and recover. Dented sections are replaced rather than reshaped.

Aluminium is also less traditional in appearance than cast iron. On a period property, aluminium may look out of place, even where it performs well. Appearance, not performance, is usually the reason to choose cast iron instead.

Maintaining aluminium gutters

Maintenance follows the same pattern as uPVC: cleaning, joint checks and bracket checks. Cleaning frequency is the same, because debris type does not change with material. Seal renewal is less frequent, but still needed over decades.

Coating damage should be touched up where it occurs, to protect the finish. Uncoated damage left exposed can mark, though structural corrosion is slow on aluminium.

Frequently asked questions

Are aluminium gutters better than uPVC?

They last longer, hold shape better and need less seal maintenance, at higher cost. For most modern homes, uPVC is sufficient. Aluminium suits long-life requirements.

Do aluminium gutters rust?

No, in the way steel does. Aluminium forms a protective oxide layer that resists corrosion. Coating damage should still be touched up for appearance.

Can aluminium gutters dent?

Yes, under impact such as a falling branch. Dented sections are replaced rather than reshaped.
